Pad, paste, putty or phase change?

The wrong material is the most expensive mistake in cooling, and it is almost always the same mistake: paste where a gap needed a pad.

A cooling brand, not a catalog brand

GELID Solutions was founded in 2008 in Hong Kong by Gebhard Scherrer and VC Tran, both of whom had spent years building thermal products before starting their own. The company designs in Hong Kong and manufactures in Mainland China and Taiwan, which is why the odd sizes survive: a 40 mm fan and a 0.5 mm pad are not worth outsourcing, but they are worth making if the tooling is yours.

The compound that made the name is GC-Extreme, launched in 2009 and still in the range. It stays workable at subzero temperatures, which is why competitive overclockers reach for it when the pot is full of liquid nitrogen — a niche of a few hundred people worldwide that nonetheless decides what the rest of us buy. IcyPad followed in 2013, the SpeedTouch fan controller in 2014, and the GP pad series has been widening one sheet size at a time ever since.

How to buy a thermal pad without guessing

Almost every thermal pad question is really a measuring question. A pad is not a gasket you compress to fit; it is a fixed height of soft silicone that has to touch both surfaces without holding them apart. Too thin and it bridges nothing. Too thick and it lifts the cold plate off the die, which costs more degrees than the pad ever saved.

Measure first, in three places

Put the heatsink on without any interface material and look at the gap from the side, or press a sliver of modeling clay into it and measure what comes out with a caliper. Do it over the tallest component and the shortest, because a VRM block is rarely flat. If the two readings differ by more than half a millimeter, that is a putty job, not a pad job.

Round up, never down

A pad slightly thicker than the gap compresses and still transfers heat. A pad thinner than the gap transfers nothing at all, because the two surfaces it was meant to join never meet it. The GP series steps 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mm for exactly this reason: pick the step above your reading.

Buy the sheet, not the shape

Pads come as rectangles you cut with scissors or a craft knife. The sheet sizes here run from small squares up to full 120 × 20 strips, so the question is how much you need rather than what shape. Cut slightly oversize and let the pad squeeze out at the edges — that is the sign it made contact.

Conductivity matters less than contact

The jump from 12 to 15 W/mK is real but small next to the difference between a pad that touches and a pad that does not. Get the thickness right first. Only then is it worth paying for the faster material.
